Chapter 22
Friday
Huldar sat down and ran through the checklist heâd prepared as soon as he got into the office that morning. He crossed off two jobs that had been done. While Erla was attending a meeting with senior management and the police PR representative about the MÃa case, he had handed out the assignments, making sure that everyone had enough to keep them busy. He allocated to himself the job of contacting the people who had spoken to BrÃet on the phone shortly before she died. There were only two names left on the list: the photographer, ÃlÃna Traustadóttir, and BrÃetâs dissertation partner, Andrea Logadóttir. The third friend, a teacher, had answered her phone and explained that she and BrÃet had been discussing plans for an imminent girlsâ trip to a summer house that they were supposed to be organising. The friend had heard what happened from BrÃetâs mother and, although BrÃetâs name hadnât yet been made public, she hadnât kept the information to herself. Apparently their circle of friends were devastated by the news. They were even thinking of cancelling their trip. This was followed by a pause, as if she hoped Huldar would encourage them to stick to their plans and go anyway. He said a curt goodbye and hung up.
The net was closing around the two women left on the list. It was more urgent to get hold of Andrea than ÃlÃna, since she had also had dealings with Rögnvaldur. But her mobile phone was still off and there had been no response to the emails or messages Huldar had sent her. He had resorted to tracking down her mother, from whom he learnt that Andrea was in Thailand and wasnât due back until tomorrow. Andrea had flown out at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning and there would be no way of contacting her until she got back. She was on a combined yoga and meditation retreat, where no phones or computers were allowed. Her mother had the idea it might be a silent retreat too. She gave Huldar the name of the place where it was being held but all his attempts to get through on the phone went unanswered.
This was incredibly frustrating, as BrÃet and Andrea had been in regular contact. Not only was it vital to get Andreaâs testimony about Rögnvaldur, but the two women had attended lectures, studied and worked on the dissertation together. It went without saying that they must have talked about more than just their studies, which meant that Andrea was almost certainly in possession of information that no one else knew. According to BrÃetâs mother, they had been planning to put in a session on the dissertation together on the Friday. It was even possible that Andrea had been at BrÃetâs flat when Rögnvaldur forced his way in, and that the unidentified blood found at the scene was hers. On the other hand, there had only been one plate on the kitchen table and nothing to suggest that two people had been sharing the pizza.
